Hyeongtae MOON

Born in 1976, artist Hyeongtae MOON initially created works characterized by dark and deep colors, often evoking a poignant, heart-wrenching feeling. In recent years, however, he has shifted to brighter, warmer themes, such as love and family, earning widespread affection from the public. His paintings, which depict slices of everyday life in vibrant colors and unique forms, convey powerful messages, likely influenced by the turbulent life he has led at a relatively young age. Memories of growing up without a proper home under the care of his father, who was also an artist, and the death of a close relative shaped MOON's complex feelings toward his family and acquaintances. These experiences prompted him to reflect deeply on major life themes such as life, art, and death from an early age.

Born in Haenam, Jeolla Province, MOON graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Chosun University in Gwangju before moving to Seoul. There, he began working in various fields, including web design, graphic design, and painting, to support himself, which later served as a foundation for his serious artistic endeavors. Since his solo exhibition *Love is a Lonely Struggle* at Gallery MAC in 2008, MOON has held several solo exhibitions each year. He was selected as one of the Top 10 Artists at SOAF in 2009 and as an Amazing Artist at the LA Art Show in 2011. His work has received strong responses not only in Korea but also in international exhibitions in Taipei, New York, London, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Before the onset of COVID-19, MOON also held a solo show in a dedicated booth at CONTEXT ART MIAMI, a major art fair in Miami, through Gallery MAC.

 

 

1976년 생 문형태 작가의 초창기 작업은 어둡고 깊이 있는 색감과 가슴 짠해지는 작업들이 주를 이루었다. 근래에는 연인이나 가족과 같은 주제로 밝고 따뜻한 느낌의 작업을 이어오며 대중들의 사랑을 받고 있다. 일상의 단면을 다채로운 색감과 독특한 형태로 표현해내는 작가의 회화 작업은 비교적 젊은 나이에 남들보다 굴곡이 심한 삶을 살아온 까닭에 작품 속에 함축하는 메시지가 강렬하다. 어린 시절 작업을 하셨던 아버지 밑에서 제대로 된 주거 공간을 가질 수 없었던 기억과 친척 어른의 죽음, 이러한 환경 속에서 겪는 가족과 지인들에 대한 애증의 관계는 작가가 인생, 예술, 죽음과 같은 커다란 삶의 명제에 대하여 일찍이 폭넓은 사유를 하게 만들었다.

전라도 해남에서 태어나 광주 조선대 순수미술학부 졸업 후 서울로 상경하여 생활에 필요한 비용을 벌기 위해 시작했던 웹디자인, 그래픽디자인, 회화 등 다양한 분야에서의 활동은 본격적인 작업을 위한 발판이 되었다. 2008년 맥화랑에서의 개인전 <사랑은 외로운 투쟁展>을 시작으로 매해 서너차례 개인전을 열며 2009년 SOAF 10대 작가, 2011 LA Art Show 어메이징 아트스트로 선정된 바 있다. 또한 국내뿐만 아니라 타이베이, 뉴욕, 런던, 홍콩, 싱가폴 등 해외전시에서도 큰 반응을 얻었으며, 코로나19가 시작되기 전에는 미국 마이애미에서 진행되었던 대형 아트페어 CONTEXT ART MIAMI에서 맥화랑을 통해 개인 부스로 Solo show를 선보이기도 했다.
