"GALLERY MAC Curated Exhibition Vol. 2: 'Sense and Perspective'
– Featuring Hyoeun Kim, Seim Shon, Yeonkyeong Jung, and Rye Choi"
GALLERY MAC is continuing its 2022 initiative with the second installment of the group exhibition 'Sense and Perspective' in 2024, showcasing female artists. The term 'female artist group exhibition' is used here not merely as a gender distinction, but as a reference to the broader concept of 'gender,' which encompasses socially constructed roles, behaviors, expectations, and identifications. This exhibition aims to explore how these artists 'sense' and view the world. While individual personalities, experiences, and environmental factors vary, the social roles and cultural expectations of being 'female' are undoubtedly present. How do these gender roles manifest in their artistic work? Are there gendered expectations or constraints within the role of an 'artist'? The exhibition 'Sense and Perspective' by Mackhwa Gallery starts with these questions.
'Sense' and 'Perspective' are crucial concepts in how we understand and experience the world. 'Sense' refers to our ability to perceive and process external stimuli, which begins with our sensory organs. We come to know and experience the world through the information our senses provide. 'Perspective' represents our viewpoint or angle on the world, influenced by personal experience, values, and cultural background. It is a significant factor in how we interpret and make sense of objects, people, and situations. Perspective also directs our attention and focus on specific subjects.
What does the world look like through the 'senses' of contemporary artists Hyoeun Kim, Seim Shon, Yeonkyeong Jung, and Rye Choi? What lies at the end of their diverse 'perspectives'? Through a discussion with the artists on April 20th at 3 PM, we will explore the differences between how they perceive and view the world as 'artists' and as 'women.' We aim to follow the trajectories of their lives through the interconnected and complementary concepts of 'sense' and 'perspective' and deepen our understanding and exploration of the world.
맥화랑 기획 vol.2 《감각과 시선》 – 김효은, 손세임, 정연경, 최례
맥화랑은 2022년 기획했던 《감각과 시선》에 이어 2024년 올해도 여성 작가 단체전으로 vol.2 《감각과 시선》을 진행한다. ‘여성 작가 단체전’라는 용어는 단순히 ‘성별’의 구분이라기 보다 사회적으로 구축된 역할, 행동, 기대, 식별 등 집합적인 개념을 지칭하는 ‘젠더’로서 그들이 ‘감각’하는 세계와 ‘시선’에 대한 이야기를 하고자 함이다. 개인의 성격이나 경험, 환경적 요인의 차이로 일반화할 수는 없지만, ‘여성’으로서의 사회적 역할과 문화적 기대는 분명 존재한다. 다만 이런한 젠더 역할이 ‘작가’라는 역할 속에서 작업으로 이어질 경우 작품은 어떤 양상을 띄게 될까. ‘작가’로서 역할에 젠더적 기대나 제한이 존재할 수 있을까. 맥화랑 기획전 《감각과 시선》은 이러한 질문에서부터 출발한 전시이다.
‘감각’과 ‘시선’은 우리가 세상을 이해하고 경험하는데 중요한 개념이다. ‘감각’은 우리의 인식 기능 중 하나로, 외부의 자극을 인지하고 처리하는 능력을 의미한다. 사람과 세계의 접촉은 오감이라고 일컫는 '감각'에서부터 시작된다. 우리는 감각기관이 받아들인 정보를 통해 세상을 인식하고 경험하게 된다. '시선'은 우리가 세계를 바라보는 관점이나 시각을 나타낸다. 이것은 개인의 경험이나 가치관, 문화적 배경 등에 의해 영향을 받는다. 우리가 사물이나 사람, 상황 등을 인식하고 해석하는 방식을 결정짓는 중요한 요소이다. 또한 ‘시선’은 우리의 주의나 관심을 특정 대상에 집중시키는 역할을 하기도 한다.
동시대를 살아가고 있는 김효은, 손세임, 정연경, 최례 작가가 '감각'한 세상은 어떤 모습일까. 각기 다른 네 명의 '시선' 끝에는 무엇이 놓여 있을까. 4월 20일 오후 3시 진행될 작가와의 만남을 통해 ‘작가’로서 감각한 세계와 시선, ‘여성’으로서 감각한 세계와 시선의 차이에 대해 이야기 나누며 우리가 세상을 이해하고 탐구하는 데 있어 상호 보완적이고 연결된 개념인 ‘감각’과 ‘시선’을 통해 그들이 선보이는 삶의 궤적을 따라 가보고자 한다. / 맥화랑 큐레이터 김정원
